Elegance from Nature, Beauty through Kindness

You might ask: what does, Elegance from Nature, Beauty through Kindness mean? Well, to begin with, it is the mission statement for The Lesser Bear. The simple answer is that the beautiful colors that I make come from plant based dyes, which are often grown locally, or even foraged in my neighborhood, and of course, silk is a natural fiber. The second half of the mission statement means that I am dedicated to kindness. My mom raised me with the saying, "Pretty is as pretty does", which might sound trivial, but I truly believe that there is no greater beauty in life than kindness, and there is nothing uglier than cruelty.  I strive for kindness to the community and my customers....

What The Lesser Bear has been supporting lately

~ Elegance from nature, Beauty through kindness ~ By now you are probably pretty familiar with The Lesser Bear mission statement (above), and know that I take it very seriously. Not only am I dedicated to only using natural dyes and high quality fabrics, but I am also dedicated to using a portion of the profits from sales to help make a difference in the world. Giving Back

The Mission Statement of the The Lesser Bear is: ~ Elegance from nature, Beauty through kindness ~   I take this mission very seriously and make it a part of everyday business at The Lesser Bear.  So, I thought I would take a minute and give a quick update on organizations we (you and I together) have supported recently. Most recently, I am supporting a campaign by my friend Chelsea of Glitteracy - who is also an amazing elementary school art teacher in a school in an underserved area. Earlier this year, Chelsea was able to overcome budget cuts and raise money to buy art supplies for her students. Currently, she is raising funds to buy technology to help teach her...

Instagram Auction: Proceeds to be Donated to Habitat for Humanity

Valentine’s Auction (on Instagram @thelesserbear): Because I want this year to be another year of  taking action, I have decided to auction off another quilt. You might remember the Quilts for Refugees Auction from last year… I have been wracking my brain lately for what would be the best organization to donate to this time. I have been listening to Busted: America's Poverty Myths a podcast by @onthemedia and am now reading Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond, and teaching at a high school in a high poverty area - so housing is on my mind. I am thinking about all the aspects of housing and their implications on the lives of those who struggle...

Looking Back: "Take your broken heart, make it into art."

Meryl Streep recently quoted Carrie Fisher as saying, "Take your broken heart, make it into art." - A quote which nicely sums up the reason behind some of my projects in 2016. I have promised myself that as I build my business, it will always incorporate an element of doing good along with making lovely things. Looking back on 2016, I am pretty proud of what I was able to do, with your help, while building and changing my business. Here is a quick look: The first project was about a year ago, when I was heartbroken and inspired by a friend's trip to the Greek Island of Lesvos to volunteer in a refugee camp. I decided to hold an Instagram...
