The Mission Statement of the The Lesser Bear is: ~ Elegance from nature, Beauty through kindness ~   I take this mission very seriously and make it a part of everyday business at The Lesser Bear.  So, I thought I would take a minute and give a quick update on organizations we (you and I together) have supported recently. Most recently, I am supporting a campaign by my friend Chelsea of Glitteracy - who is also an amazing elementary school art teacher in a school in an underserved area. Instagram Auction: Proceeds to be Donated to Habitat for Humanity

Valentine’s Auction (on Instagram @thelesserbear): Because I want this year to be another year of  taking action, I have decided to auction off another quilt. You might remember the Quilts for Refugees Auction from last year… I have been wracking my brain lately for what would be the best organization to donate to this time. I have been listening to Busted: America's Poverty Myths a podcast by @onthemedia and am now reading Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond, and teaching at a high school in a high poverty area - so housing is on my mind. I am thinking about all the aspects of housing and their implications on the lives of those who struggle...

Looking Back: "Take your broken heart, make it into art."

Meryl Streep recently quoted Carrie Fisher as saying, "Take your broken heart, make it into art." - A quote which nicely sums up the reason behind some of my projects in 2016. I have promised myself that as I build my business, it will always incorporate an element of doing good along with making lovely things. Looking back on 2016, I am pretty proud of what I was able to do, with your help, while building and changing my business. Refugee Quilts

  These quilts began their journey to Greece yesterday. If you don't follow The Lesser Bear on Instagram (@thelesserbear) you might not be familiar with this project. After running the fundraising auction, to raise money to aid the Syrian refugees on the Greek Island of Lesvos, I began to make this series of quilts. It was at the suggestion of my friend Tamara of Les Lolos, who volunteered on the island, and thought that quilts might help brighten up a mother and children's tent at Camp Moria.   My goal was to create something bright and cheery, something uplifting, and of course something very durable as I am not 100% positive where these quilts might eventually end up and how they might be...
